BC Patient Transfer Network

The BC Patient Transfer Network is responsible for the planning and coordination of all inter-facility patient transfers.
​​The BC Patient Transfer Network (BCPTN) replaces BC Bedline as a new provincial service that includes clinical oversight 24/7, improved coordination for inter-facility transfers and better communication between sending/receiving sites ensuring patients throughout B.C. receive appropriate care at the appropriate facility in a more timely and efficient way.

BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) launched the BCPTN project in fall 2011. This collaboration with health authorities, BC Ambulance Service (BCAS) and other partners improves the process for transferring patients between health services and enhances communication among health professionals. The goal is better coordination of services to ensure patients throughout B.C. receive the appropriate care, at the appropriate facility in a more timely, and efficient way.

Improvements to the patient transfer planning process are being phased in over time and callers are already experiencing service enhancements. Patient transfer coordinators are using new triage questions to quickly direct calls and clinical transfer nurses are available 24/7 to coordinate high acuity cases. Emergency transfer physicians are also available around the clock to provide medical oversight if required. The goal is to connect physicians from sending and receiving sites as quickly as possible, while bringing in other appropriate resources as required.


Timely, Efficient, Seamless Service Delivery

When fully implemented, one number will link clinicians around the province to the BCPTN call centre as the single, centralized point of contact for all inter-facility patient transfers.
