Revelstoke Celebrates New Station Opening

City council members, BC Ambulance Service (BCAS) staff, and local fire and Search and Rescue partners were in attendance for a formal ribbon cutting ceremony on February 1, to celebrate the grand opening of a brand new ambulance station in Revelstoke.

Located on the corner of Oscar and Edwards streets, the 3,186 square-foot permanent facility includes crew quarters (consisting of a common room with kitchenette, bathrooms, bedrooms and Unit Chief office) and an enclosed ambulance bay.

The purchase of the property from the City of Revelstoke was completed in March 2008 following a public hearing at which attendees were supportive of the land-use designation and zoning change. Site construction began in May 2010 and crews have been in operation at their new location since December 21, 2010.

“The new station was designed and developed with staff health and safety in mind,” said BCAS Chief Operating Officer Les Fisher. “The garage has a state-of-the-art HVAC system to quickly clear exhaust which enables crews to clean and stock the ambulances in an ideal environment. There is also a specified decontamination area for paramedics to clean up when required, which reduces the spread of illness and disease.”

With 185 stations across the province, all at varying degrees of their natural facilities life cycle, demand for upgrades and expansion have to be balanced against those investments which directly impact patient care. Providing paramedics with a safe station work environment is an ongoing priority for the BCAS and efforts will continue to be directed towards station improvements.
