EMCT Qualifications

Learn about the qualifications needed to become an emergency medical call-taker (EMCT) with BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS).

​​Licences and certificates

To continue in the BCHES hiring process, emergency medical call-takers must have the following before their hire date:

  • A current and valid cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR-C) certificate or higher

Other prerequisites for this ​​role

You must also meet these requirements:

  • Grade 12 diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to type 40 words per minute
  • Minimum age of 19
  • Legal eligibility to work full-time in Canada
  • Strong knowledge of British Columbia geography
  • Ability to pass a Criminal Record Check, medical exam and audiology (hearing) assessment before hire
  • Availability to work shifts, including nights, weekends and statutory holidays

Additional desired training 

  • We give preference to applicants with valid MPDS (Medical Priority Dispatch System) certification, but this is not required to apply​​
