EMR Qualifications

​​Licences and certificates

To work as an emergency medical responders (EMR) with BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS), you must have the following:

  • A valid emergency medical responder licence from the Emergency Medical Licensing Board
  • A class 1, 2 or 4 BC driver's licence (or an equivalent from another province), or be able to get one within 6 months of your start date
  • A current driver's abstract that shows a safe driving record
  • A high school diploma or equivalent
  • A valid work permit for Canada, or the ability to get one
  • You must be 19 years or older
  • Ability to work different shifts, including evenings, nights and weekends
  • Strong mental resilience and maturity, and the ability to work well in a fast-paced, changing environment
