PCP Application Process

BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) accepts applications for casual paramedic positions year-round. Below are the steps in the application and hiring process, and what to expect at each stage.

1Apply

Casual positions

To apply for a casual position, complete the Application for Employment form.

Make sure you have all required documents ready before you apply.

Regular part-time or full-time positions

To apply for regular part-time or full-time roles, visit Brainhunter and apply directly to any positions you qualify for. You do not need to submit a separate application form for these roles.

Required documents

  • Application for employment - submit form
  • Primary care paramedic licence from the Emergency Medical Assistants Licensing Board (EMALB)
  • Copy of your current driver's licence
    • You must get a Class 4 licence (or equivalent) within 6 months of being hired if you do not already have one already
  • Driver's abstract (from ICBC or your provincial provider)
  • Proof of grade 12 graduation or post-secondary education
  • Canadian work permit (if applicable)

Additional requirements:

  • Be available for at least 8 day or night shifts per month
  • Be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Be able to communicate clearly with patients, paramedic partners, and other health professionals

2Interview

If you are shortlisted, we will invite you to an interview. We will assess your skills and experience using behaviour-based questions to see how you fit the paramedic role.

3Reference and criminal record checks

If you pass the interview:
  • We will contact your references (for example, current or past supervisor)
  • You must complete a criminal record check (you are responsible for the cost through the Ministry of Justice)

4Pre-hire requirements

If your references are positive, you will:

  • Complete a fitness assessment
  • Provide your availability and preferred station locations

BCEHS operates across the province, and station availability changes monthly. Not all locations will be hiring at the same time.

If you choose larger urban areas, you may wait longer for placement. Choosing rural or remote stations may help you start sooner.

5Job offer

If you:
  • Submit all required documents
  • Pass the fitness assessment
  • Receive a clear criminal record check
You will be scheduled for a New Employee Orientation (NEO) session.
  • NEO takes place in Vancouver
  • BCEHS covers travel and accommodation for eligible candidates
  • We confirm your station placement during this stage with a Talent Acquisition representative
You will receive your official job offerafter we place you in a station and before your NEO date.
