As of September 8, 2025, BCEHS paramedics and emergency medical responders (EMRs) will ask all patients if they identify as First Nations, Inuit, or Métis.
This initiative is a voluntary and confidential self-identification process for patients who identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit or Métis). It follows standard practice used in most health care facilities across BC.
BCEHS developed this change with the Indigenous Health Program to support culturally safe and trauma-informed care. It also meets legal requirements set by the BC Ministry of Health and supports BCEHS’ commitment to reconciliation.
If you have Indigenous ancestry, you may choose to self-identify. You can define your identity in your own way — you do not need to provide proof.
Your answer will not affect the care you receive. You can choose not to answer at any time, no matter how you identify.
We keep all information confidential and protect it under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
Asking patients to self-identify as Indigenous helps improve cultural safety in emergency care. It also helps address health inequities experienced by Indigenous Peoples.
- Equity in care
Indigenous Peoples in BC have experienced – and continue to experience – inequities and racism in the health care system, as highlighted in the In Plain Sight report. Asking this question helps us recognize and address these issues. It may also help connect patients with cultural and wellness supports. -
